Lash Thickness Guide: 0.03 vs 0.05 vs 0.07 mm
How lash extension thickness shapes the look: 0.03, 0.05 and 0.07 mm compared for classic and volume work.
*General industry knowledge for lash buyers — confirm the exact specs, materials and curls available with the factory when you request a quote.*
Lash thickness is the spec that decides almost everything else about an extension set: how dark it reads, how much weight sits on the natural lash, which techniques your techs can use, and how you build your price list. Length and curl get most of the attention at the consultation, but thickness is the number you lock first when you specify a product line. This guide covers the three diameters that matter most in factory catalogues — 0.03 mm, 0.05 mm and 0.07 mm — and how to map each one to a look and a technique.
Start with weight, not drama
Thickness is the fiber's diameter in millimetres. A thicker fiber carries more material per strand, so it looks darker and feels stiffer; a thinner fiber looks softer and fluffier. The trade-off is weight.
Natural lashes tolerate only so much load. That is why volume artists build fans from very fine fibers rather than stacking thick ones: fine diameters are the industry's standard answer to keeping volume sets wearable. Confirm the exact fiber weights with your factory when you spec a line. Go thick and you sacrifice comfort, retention and natural-lash health; go thin and you add time and skill to every appointment.
Thickness also has to be paired with the right curl, or the set won't sit cleanly on the lash line. If you are still mapping curls, start with our breakdown of lash curl types before you finalise a thickness order.
Lash thickness at a glance: 0.03 vs 0.05 vs 0.07 mm
- 0.03 mm — The finest diameter in the standard range. Built for hand-made volume fans. Soft, light, fluffy finish.
- 0.05 mm — Mid-weight fiber. Light volume fans, hybrid sets, textured mapping — and usable as a classic on finer natural lashes.
- 0.07 mm — The heaviest of the three. Classic 1:1 sets, plus small fans where you want a darker, more defined lash line.
One practical note: many extension factories stock exactly these three diameters. Qingdao Allbest Industry Co., Ltd. (brand Qdallbest) lists 0.03/0.05/0.07 mm across its extension lines, with C/D/CC/DD curls and 7–15 mm mixed trays. If you need an unusual diameter, confirm it before you build a catalogue around it.
0.03 mm: the volume workhorse
0.03 mm is a fan-building fiber. It is thin enough to pick up multiple fine strands and still land a fan that closes well and sits comfortably. The result is a dense, soft, fluffy set rather than a spiky one — the look most clients now ask for by name.
Commercially, volume services take longer, need more skill, and generally support a higher service price, so 0.03 mm trays belong in your premium tier. Stock several curls and mixed lengths, because fan work lives or dies on matching the natural lash map. See our volume lash extensions guide for the technique and mapping context.
Watch out for fiber quality. At this diameter, cheap fiber frays, loses curl, or refuses to fan cleanly. Order samples and test them the way your techs actually work.
0.05 mm: the flexible middle
0.05 mm covers the most ground, and for many salons it is the single most useful tray to keep in stock.
- Light volume — fans stay light but read noticeably fuller than classic.
- Hybrid sets — mix 0.05 mm fans with 0.07 mm classics for texture and depth.
- Fine natural lashes — used 1:1, 0.05 mm is often a safer choice than 0.07 mm on weak or sparse lashes.
- Texture mapping — alternating diameters creates a spiky, editorial finish without extreme fan counts.
For distributors, 0.05 mm is a sensible default spec when you don't know the end client's preference — it answers most requests without committing you to a volume-only or classic-only line.
0.07 mm: classic sets and a defined line
0.07 mm is the classic diameter: one fiber per natural lash, applied for speed and a clean, defined result. It reads darker than 0.05 mm at the same length and curl, so if your market is dominated by classic clients, this is your volume seller.
It also works in pairs and small fans. Two 0.07 mm strands give a bolder line than a 0.05 mm fan of the same count, which is useful for outer-corner mapping and cat-eye effects.
Watch out for overloading. On fine or damaged lashes, a full set of 0.07 mm at maximum length is the fastest way to lose retention and upset clients. Map carefully, keep inner-corner lengths short, and save the longest lengths for the outer third. Our eyelash extensions range shows how diameters, curls and lengths are typically grouped in mixed trays.
Matching thickness to technique and client look
- Natural, everyday — 0.07 mm classics, shorter lengths, C or CC curl.
- Soft volume — 0.05 mm light fans, or 0.03 mm finer fans.
- Full, fluffy volume — 0.03 mm hand-made fans.
- Spiky / textured — 0.07 mm spikes mixed with 0.03–0.05 mm fans.
- Dramatic and dark — 0.07 mm classics for base density, 0.03 mm fans for fullness.
Rule of thumb: as thickness goes down, fan count can go up. As thickness goes up, keep fan counts low and lengths conservative.
Factory checklist before you place a lash order
- Confirm the diameter range in writing. Match what the factory stocks to your own product codes before you publish specs on your site.
- Decide fiber type. Mink-style faux fiber is the industry standard for the 0.03–0.05 mm range. Reputable extension factories sell mink-style fiber only — if a supplier offers real mink, ask hard questions.
- Check curls and lengths. C/D/CC/DD curls and 7–15 mm mixed trays cover most salon demand.
- Ask about MOQs by category. Typical minimums sit around 10 pieces, 10 boxes or 100 boxes depending on whether you are buying trays, DIY kits or packaging — so a mixed first order can be smaller than buyers expect.
- Ask about the full line, not just trays. If you sell retail or run your own brand, DIY lash kits (pre-cut segment clusters, glue sets, home kits such as the LC228 DIY 10D kit in PBT and the LC227 3D pre-cut cluster), lash packaging (plastic boxes, paper boxes, paper bags, gift bags, custom logo OEM/ODM) and tools (tweezers, disposable extension brushes at 50 pcs/pack, double-sided round mini compact mirrors) let you build a fuller catalogue from one supplier.
- Check responsiveness before committing. Qingdao Allbest Industry Co., Ltd. (brand Qdallbest) is based in Qingdao, Shandong, China, founded in 2016, with 11–50 staff and annual revenue below US$1 million — a small, specialised operation rather than a large trading house. Its Alibaba store has 4 years of history, a 5.0/5 rating from 22 reviews, a 99.64% response rate and an average response time within 2 hours. Listed export markets: North America 15%, Western Europe 10%, Eastern Europe 10%, South America 10%, Northern Europe 8%, Southern Europe 7%, domestic China 5%.
